How I made 2 Autumnal Theme Greeting Cards

Hello Everyone,

I have been having lots of fun creating in my Craft Room and I wanted to show you how I made my Autumnal Theme greeting cards.

It’s been a long while since I have written a blog post. I have been having fun sailing, gardening, having adventures with Herbie and Mum and crafting so there never seemed time for writing a blog post. During August I made a challenge for Herbie and I to do together, which I called the “Add A Little In August” Challenge. We have been having lots of fun changing things to make them easier and doing lots of new things.

One of our challenges was having a big sort‑out in my craft room. I don’t know about you, but I seem to collect all sorts of things — some brand‑new and never touched, some well‑loved but ready to move on, and some destined for the charity shop so I can finally make a bit more space for new crafty things. A few bits will be popping up on Marketplace or my website soon too.

Herbie has been very helpful through out the process, keeping a watchful eye on everything I uncovered and barking with delight whenever a forgotten toy or ball appeared. Then I had a little spark of inspiration… why not turn this tidy‑up into a card making challenge game?

So, I cut up 10 pieces of card and wrote on three of them, the names of three different packs of patterned paper, four of them, the four Stampin’ Up! colour families, and the last three, three different stamp sets. I grouped the cards on the floor so each one was easy for Herbie to see and placed a treat on top of each one. The challenge was simple: whichever card Herbie ate the treat from first in each group would decide what I’d use to make my next set of projects.

Herbie absolutely loved it — and I had a fun creating a batch of cards using only the products Herbie had chosen. I will do the same thing again soon with Herbie choosing the products used.

I had a look at the patterned paper and chose the sheets I wanted to use. This paper is gorgeous, it has like a shiny effect. It’s hard to see in the photos. Then I picked Crumb Cake, Early Expresso and Very Vanilla card stock and some Early Expresso ink and I was ready to make my cards.

My first card was for a friend of mine who has just had an operation, so I knew I wanted to make a thinking of you card for her. I started with a piece of A4 Early Espresso cardstock and scored it down the long edge at 14.85 cm. Then I flipped it and cut down the short edge at 10.5 cm. I always prefer to score first and cut second — that way you end up with two card bases ready to go, perfect for making a pair of cards at once.

Next, I cut a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock at 14.4 cm along the long edge, then flipped it and cut at 10 cm along the short edge. With the remaining piece (which was slightly larger), I trimmed it again at 10 cm, giving me four card layers.

I glued one of the Very Vanilla layers onto the Early Espresso card front, and another inside the card. The remaining two layers I used inside the second card.

For the patterned paper, I trimmed it to size and decided to make things a little more fun by cutting it into strips of different widths. I arranged and glued these onto the card front for a bit of extra interest.

To finish, I stamped a sentiment from the Scalloped Blooms stamp set using Early Espresso ink, layered it onto a piece of Early Espresso cardstock, and adhered it to the card.

For this card, I used the second piece of Early Espresso cardstock I had already cut and turned it into a card base. I glued one of the Very Vanilla layers on top to create a clean background.

For the three decorative strips, I cut Early Espresso pieces measuring 4.5 x 9 cm, then cut the patterned paper at 4 x 8.5 cm. I glued the patterned paper onto each strip and spaced them evenly across the card front.

All that was left was to choose a sentiment. I stamped it in Early Espresso ink onto a scrap of Very Vanilla cardstock, layered it onto a piece of Early Espresso, and adhered it to the card. I kept it flat to help with postage costs, but you could absolutely add dimensionals if you prefer a bit of dimension to your project.

I’ve now finished my two Autumnal Theme greeting cards and they are both in envelopes with stamps on ready for when Herbie and I go out for a walk later.
